Tensar TriAx Geogrids

Tensar® TriAx Geogrids

Ground-Breaking Technology for Building Economical, Long-Lasting Structures Over Challenging Soils.

Tensar TriAx geogrids permit construction on sites with weak soils eliminating all or most other foundation and/or soil stabilization work. These structural geogrids provide a reliable, cost effective method for increasing the stability of weak soils in a variety of applications including haul roads, intermodal facilities, military installation, railroads and industrial sites. By internally reinforcing all types of soils and construction fill material, Tensar TriAx geogrids create a stiffened, reinforced prism capable of supporting critical, engineered structures.

With its unique triangular structure, TriAx Geogrid represents a revolutionary advancement in geogrid technology specifically developed for trafficked surfaces. Its multi-directional properties leverage the triangular geometry, one of construction’s most stable shapes, to provide a new level of in-plane stiffness. The transition from a rectangular to a triangular grid aperture, coupled with an increase in rib thickness and junction efficiency, offers the construction industry a better alternative to conventional materials and practices.

Benefits of Tensar TriAx:
  • Extends the service life of a pavement structure by as much 500% - Reducing maintenance and rehabilitation intervals.
  • Enhanced performance provides significant life-cycle cost savings over conventional pavements.
  • Reduces asphalt pavement thickness by 15% - 30%; Aggregate base course thickness by 25% - 50%; and Asphalt thickness up to 30%.
  • Thinner pavement sections - Simplified installation with uniform total section depths.
  • Backed by full-scale testing.
  • Multi-direction load distribution can handle radial pavement loads.

Tensar TriAx Geogrids for Pavement Reinforcement

TriAx Pavement Reinforcement Flexible pavement systems often fail prematurely due to progressive lateral displacement and weakening of the aggregate base course. Additionally, sections with insufficient foundation support will strain gradually due to channelized traffic while the pavement is in service. This results in both rutting and asphalt fatigue leading to eventual cracking of the pavement surface. Tensar TriAx Geogrids provide a mechanically stabilized layer (MSL) within either the aggregate base or granular subbase, thereby maintaining structural capacity and improving the long-term performance of the pavement system. In flexible pavement structures, Tensar TriAx Geogrids are traditionally used to reinforce the aggregate base course layer immediately below the asphalt cement concrete. Tensar TriAx Geogrids utilized to reinforce pavement structures can provide a reduction in material component thicknesses, an increase in service life, or a combination of the two.

Tensar TriAx Geogrids for Haul Roads

Tensar Haul Roads

Weak subgrades pose the greatest challenge to the performance of an unpaved access or haul roads. Left untreated, a weak subgrade subjected to continuous heavy traffic will quickly deform, causing the road surface to rut, pothole, washboard, and ultimately deteriorate beyond use.

Tensar TriAx Geogrids are designed to reduce construction induced or in-service stresses applied to weak subgrades. They interlock with aggregate to create a stiffened platform that evenly distributes the load, increases the bearing capacity and ensuring longer-term stability and performance. The use of TriAx has also demonstrated effective separation and filtration properties, inhibiting movement and confining the subgrade when properly graded aggregate fill is utilized.

Tensar Geogrids for Subgrade Stabilization

TriAx Subgrade Stabilization

Use Tensar Geogrids for subgrade stabilization for improved site access, reduced aggregate requirements, reduced undercut, reduced maintenance, and simple installation.  Weak foundation soils (subgrades) are a common problem in road construction. Large deformation of the subgrade will lead to a rapid deterioration of the pavement surface. The interlocking action of aggregate and Tensar Geogrids results in a stiffened granular platform. This platform enhances load distribution, much like a snowshoe distributes a person’s weight evenly over soft snow. The “snowshoe effect” generated, reduces the stress applied to the subgrade.  The greater rib depth and radial stiffness of the TriAx Geogrid is even more effective in confining overlying granular fill, enhancing the “snowshoe effect” over soft subgrades by locking aggregate particles more efficiently during the compaction effort.

Tensar Geogrids for Foundation Improvement

Tensar Foundation Improvement

As an alternative to deep over-excavation, concrete slabs, chemical stabilization/cement grouting and deep foundations, Tensar Geogrids can increase the effective bearing capacity of soil beneath shallow spread footings.  Creating a stiffened mat beneath the concrete footing reduces total and differential settlement and improves the margin of safety for unforeseen soil conditions.  Geogrids can also provide a load transfer platform when used with an intermediate foundation system, such as rammed aggregate piers, or traditional deep foundation techniques.

While conventional approaches can be expensive, labor intensive or environmentally unsound, utilizing Tensar TriAx or Tensar BX Geogrids provides an economical alternative to a potentially costly undertaking.
